Who we are

Dynamic Nelspruit

Nelspruit (Mbombela) is the capital of the beautiful Mpumalanga province and is situated in the heart of the Lowveld. Nelspruit is a fast-growing town, with a young and vibrant community focussed on supporting our local agriculture and businesses, as well as protecting our wildlife.

The Natural Splendour Of The Lowveld

Fertile and naturally blessed with reliable rainfall, the Lowveld is well known for its macadamia, avocado, coffee bean, mango, litchi, and citrus farming. Our mild winters, warm summers, and abundance of sunshine allows us to braai often, enjoy nature and appreciate our wildlife.

Hear The Music!

Nelspruit also hosts one of the biggest and most popular cultural, arts and music festivals. The “Innibos Laeveld Nasionale Kunstefees” is held annually and promises a wide selection of top tier live performances by beloved artists.

Our Gardens Are Living Sanctuaries

Wildlife that you may spot on a stroll through our gardens includes banded mongoose, red duiker, vervet monkey, small spotted genet, owls, porcupines, and an abundance of birds. Look out for our famous, Purple-crested Turaco (locally known as the Lowveld Loerie). These striking birds with their red wings love our lush gardens and spend many an afternoon jumping from branch to branch.

Lowveld Landscape

Our gardens were designed and are still maintained by Rea Olivier (1939/09/23), a well-known Lowvelder with more than 50 years of gardening experience. She is fondly known as “Gogo” (grandmother), and you will see her on the property overseeing the gardeners with a skilled hand. Gogo makes every effort to cultivate only indigenous plants that are beneficial to our local bird population.

A Birders Paradise…

Thanks to our wonderful gardens, we have well-established populations of Sunbirds, Green Wood-Hoopoe, Mannikins (frets), Black Coloured Barbets, Drongos, Robins, King Fishers, Paradise Fly Catchers, and many more bird species.

What’s On Offer Locally?

From Nelspruit, visitors have easy access to visit world-renowned mountain waterfalls, small rural towns such as Sabie, Kaapsehoop, Graskop, Pelgrimsrus, and the gem of South African national parks, the Kruger National Park.

Sabie is a small town located in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, situated at the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains. The town is known for its beautiful natural scenery, including forests, waterfalls, and rivers, making it a popular destination for tourists looking to explore the region's natural beauty.

Graskop is famous for its adventure activities including the Big Swing, zipline, glass lift into the gorge, and the breathtaking God’s Window.

Pilgrim's Rest is a small museum town, protected as a provincial heritage site where you will find The Royal Hotel, a late Victorian-style building from the late 19th century.

Barberton boasts the world-famous Baberton Makhonjwa Geotrail (on the pending list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site programme). This is a definite bucket list item. The Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail will take you on a journey into the past, more than 3 billion years ago.

Our Heritage

The building from which The Green Lizard Guesthouse operates was built in the early 1970’s and was only transformed into a guesthouse recently. We’ve attempted to keep the original layout and character of the house. The main building structure, garden terraces, swimming pool, and entrance are all still according to the original building plans. We have made changes to some of the interior walls to allow for ensuite guestrooms and staff quarters. About 2 years ago we accidentally discovered an underground water reservoir beneath one of the verandas which we converted into a storeroom.

We hope that you will come to love and appreciate the house and its surroundings as we do.
